Wolves claw past Bears

Box Score

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves women’s basketball team captured a big road victory on Wednesday night as they took down the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne, 62-56.

Newberry (10-5, 6-3) got a big lift from sophomore forward Jaya Schultz (Santa Clarita, California) as she tied a career-high with 14 points to go along with four offensive rebounds and no turnovers. Junior guard Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Vic, Australia) also added 20 points and eight boards to lead the Wolves in both categories.

The Wolves were red hot in the second half as they shot a blistering 61.5 percent from the field including shooting 100 percent on 14-14 shooting inside the 3-point arc. The Wolves did go 2-12 from deep in the half and just 4-25 the entire game.

The Wolves faced a 13-7 deficit to start the game but responded with a 6-0 run and five straight points from Creed to tie the game at 13 with 10:41 left in the first half. Lenoir-Rhyne would charge back and push their lead to 20-13 on a 7-0 run of their own but that would be the largest lead they would have all game.

Newberry closed the gap before halftime and looked to go into the break with the lead at 25-24 but preseason all-SAC player Jazmine Charles hit a step-back jumper at the buzzer to give the Bears (5-8, 4-5) a 26-25 lead.

The second half saw Newberry take the lead again at 30-28 and never look back. The Wolves led for 21:01 of the contest with 18:48 of it coming in the second half. The largest lead was 12 points by Newberry with 3:44 left.

In the second half, despite remaining cold from the perimeter, Newberry did a good job of stretching the Bears defense and finding holes for easy jumpers and layups and a total of 15 assists. The play at one point resulted in five straight baskets as the Wolves kept the Bears at bay and allowed them to get no closer than 7 points the last 6:00 of the game.

Newberry outrebounded Lenoir-Rhyne 36-30 for the game and only turned the ball over 12 times. Neither team got major production off the bench as the Bears led that category by a slight 4-3 margin.

The Wolves will round of their three game road trip as they travel to Brevard on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff against the Tornados. It will be the second meeting between the teams this season as the Wolves won the first matchup.
