MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Sophomore Darrian Jamison led the Wolves with a 2-3 evening at the plate as Newberry fell 6-2 to Georgia College in the Georgia College Round Robin at the Peeler Complex.
After schedule changes pushed Newberry's (13-7) first game of the round robin to 6 p.m. and eliminated one of the squads' games for the weekend, the Wolves took to the field against the homestanding Bobcats (17-5).
The two sides took the first two innings to feel one another out, before the Bobcats put up three runs in the bottom of the third. Newberry threatened in the next half inning as Jamison (Versailles, Ky.) led off with a double to center.
Senior pinch runner Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, but the Wolves next two batters went down on strikes and a ground out to end the inning.
Georgia College added a fourth run in the fourth inning, before putting two more runs on the scoreboard in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead over the Wolves.
The sixth inning looked as if it would go Newberry's way as Jamison singled to short with one out. Senior Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) followed with a walk before senior Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) reached on a fielder's choice as Jamison was tagged out at third.
A single to center from senior Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) looked as though it would load the bases, but Hosking was caught between bases for the final out of the inning.
The seventh inning allowed the Wolves a chance to avoid the shutout as freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) singled to open the frame. A sacrifice bunt pushed Drawe to second, but she was soon sent back to the dugout as junior Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) reached on a fielder's choice.
Ayres moved to third on a pair of errors by the Bobcats' shortstop, which also allowed freshman Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) to reach base safely. Junior Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) singled to right to score Ayres and move Gerndt to second, where she would stay shortly as Jamison drew a walk to load the bases. The final at-bat of the game belonged to Hosking, who singled up the middle to score Gerndt. The Wolves saw its comeback chances disappear as Bedard tried to score from second and was thrown out at the plate.
Junior Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) was tagged with a loss, despite striking out four on the evening.
The Wolves return to action in the Georgia College Round Robin tomorrow afternoon with a 2 p.m. scheduled first pitch against No. 23 Barry. The Wolves get another chance against Georgia College at 4 p.m.
