Wolves finish in 29th at tough Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND - Unseasonably cold conditions on the South Carolina coast cooled off the Newberry Wolves' game, as the the women's golf team finished the Kiawah Island Classic in 29th place Tuesday.

Newberry shot a 362-323-346=995 for the three-round tournament and finished ahead of seven Division I teams as the only non-Division I team in the 36-team, 192-golfer field. The Wolves were ahead of teams from the Ohio Valley, American Athletic, Atlantic Sun, Southern, Atlantic 10, Patriot League and Metro Atlantic Conferences.

Marianna Monaco (Yonkers, N.Y.) was Newberry's top finisher in 124th with a three-day total of 247. Eline Askeland (Olso, Norway) and Sophia Opitz each shot 253 over three days to tie for 138th. Annabelle Dallery (Sumter, S.C.) was one stroke behind them at 254 in a tie for 141st and Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) rounded out Newberry's team with a 258 to tie for 156th.

The Wolves' 995 was five strokes behind USC Upstate. Kent State won the event with an 892. The Wolves were ahead of Tennessee Tech, Rutgers, Northern Kentucky, The Citadel, Bucknell, Richmond and Niagara.

Newberry continues its tough stretch of the spring season with another Division I tournament next week. The Wolves head to Jacksonville, Fla., for the Don Benbow Collegiate Invitational hosted by Butler University next Monday and Tuesday.
