Wolves blanked in pair of non-conference games against King

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY - Despite eight hits on the day and ten strikeouts from the pitching staff, the Newberry softball team was on the wrong side of a pair of 1-0 decisions as the King Tornado swept the Wolves at the Smith Road Complex.

Senior Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) was the only Newberry player with multiple hits in a game on Monday afternoon. In the circle junior Madison Burnett (Pickens, Ga.) struck out six, while junior Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) set down four on her own.

The Wolves fall to 15-15 on the season, while King improves to 16-19 on the year.

Newberry returns to conference action on Wednesday, with a scheduled doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. against the Catawba Lady Indians.

Game One: King 1, Newberry 0
[Box Score]

Burnett sat down six, while Capobianco finished a perfect 3-3 in the opening game loss to the Tornado.

King plated the lone run of the game in the top of the second when a throwing error saw a base runner reach second, only to score on a single to left from the very next batter. Burnett escaped further trouble with two strikeouts and a ground out to wrap up the second.

Newberry looked to respond in the third when Capobianco led off with a single to left. After Capobianco advanced on a groundout, a hit by pitch and walk loaded the bases for the Wolves. All three runners were left stranded as the third out was made following the walk of sophomore Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Ky) to load the bases.

Newberry saw runners reach third in the fourth and seventh innings, but left the runners stranded both times. The Wolves struggled with runners on base and saw the left on base column read 10 at the conclusion of the opener

Game Two: King 1, Newberry 0
[Box Score]

The second game saw Newberry string together only two hits on offense, while in the circle Middleton fanned four.

The Wolves opened the game in the bottom of the third with junior Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) reaching on an error before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. A ground out placed Ayres at third, but with two outs the Wolves were unable to plate a run as a strikeout wrapped up the frame.

It was the fourth inning that seemed most promising for the Wolves as junior Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) singled, before heading to second on a Jamison walk. A bloop single by senior Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) loaded the bases with one out for freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.). Draw hit into a fielder's choice as Bedard was forced out at the plate. A fly out ended the inning for Newberry.

King posted an unearned run in the fifth, for what would be the game winner.
