Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - The Newberry softball team cruised to a pair of victories over the Brevard Tornados on Saturday at the Smith Road Complex in the Wolves' South Atlantic Conference opener.
Senior Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) drove in five RBI, while junior Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) scored six runs on the day as the Wolves topped Brevard 9-3 in game one and 7-1 in game two.
Newberry improves to 15-9 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Tornados fall to 11-14 overall and 0-2 in conference.
The Wolves travel to Hickory, N.C. on Wednesday for a conference doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne, scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.

Hosking was 3-4 at the plate with five RBI in the Wolves' game one win over the Tornados.
Newberry opened the scoring in the first when senior Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) reached on a catcher's interference. After Bedard was hit by a pitch, sophomore Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Ky.) singled through the left side to score Basch and push Bedard to third. The throw to the plate allowed for Jamison to reach second safely.
Bedard scored her first run of the day when she scored on a groundout by Hosking.
The third inning saw Newberry plate a pair of runs as Basch led off with a triple down the right field line. Bedard was hit by a pitch for the second time and promptly stole second base. A one-out double to right by Hosking scored both Basch and Bedard.
After being held to just one hit in the fourth, Newberry opened the fifth with a single to center by Basch. An error allowed Bedard to reach safely, and the pair of base runners moved up a base on a single by Hosking. With the bases loaded, sophomore Casey Nellums (Duluth, Ga.) single to right to plate both Basch and Bedard.
The top of the sixth saw Brevard plate a pair of runs, before Newberry senior Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) and junior Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) recorded back-to-back singles. A one-out single by Bedard saw Capobianco score and Ayres advance to second. After advancing to second and third, Ayres and Bedard scored on a two-out single down the right field line by Hosking.
Brevard pushed a single run across in the seventh, before a foul out to Jamison ended the game with a 9-3 Newberry victory.

Eight of Newberry's nine starters recorded a hit in Newberry's game two victory over the Tornados.
The first inning saw Newberry plate five runs as Ayres led the inning off by reaching on an error. A sacrifice bunt moved Ayres to second, and the speedy Washingtonian would find herself on third as she advanced from second on the throw.
Bedard singled to left to score Ayres and would move to second as Jamison was hit by a pitch. A double-steal saw Bedard and Jamison both move into scoring position, allowing them to score on a two-out single by freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.). Drawe advanced to second on a wild pitch and third as freshman Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) was hit by a pitch.
The inning continued as freshman Madison Tepfenhart (York, S.C.) singled to right allowing Drawe to score. Gerndt would score the fifth run of the inning for Newberry Capobianco singled to left.
Two more runs were put on the scoreboard in the second inning as Basch singled and advanced to second a passed ball. An infield single by Bedard put runners on the corners. Jamison followed Bedard's infield single with a double to left center to score Basch and Bedard.
Brevard plated one run in the third, before both teams' offenses were shutdown for the remainder of the game.
