Hosking helps power Wolves in 13-5 win over Lady Hurricanes

Box Score

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Newberry senior Leah Hosking launched her first home run of the season at Hillcrest Park on Saturday evening as the Wolves toppled Georgia Southwestern 13-5 at the Hampton Jordan Classic.

Newberry (4-1), the designated visiting team at the neutral site game, picked up an early lead over Georgia Southwestern (5-3) when senior Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) reached first on a muffed throw by the Lady Hurricanes' first baseman after the Georgia Southwestern catcher dropped the third strike of Basch's at-bat.

The inning continued as preseason All-SAC junior Gabby Bedard singled down the left field line. Basch was soon retired as she was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice, which saw Bedard reach second and sophomore Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Ky.) reach first. With two outs and runners on first and second, freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) continued the hot start to her collegiate career with a single up the middle, which would plate Bedard.

After posting one run in the first, Newberry held Georgia Southwestern scoreless in the bottom half of the inning. The Lady Hurricanes answered with a 1-2-3 effort on defense in the top of the second before scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.

Trailing 2-1 after three full innings, the Wolves saw Drawe single to center with one out in the top of the fourth. A grounder from freshman Madison Tepfenhart (York, S.C.) resulted in runners on first and second as Drawe beat the throw to second from the Lady Hurricanes. After a pop up left the Wolves with two outs, Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) hit a low line drive double down the right field line that pushed Drawe across the plate and moved Tepfenhart to third.

The very next batter grabbed extra bases as well, when senior Katie Capobianco (Coconutc Creek, Fla.) tripled to left center to score senior pinch runner Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Hosking before the inning ended.

The bottom of the fifth saw Georgia Southwestern push across a pair of runs to tie the game at 4-4.

Newberry posted another crooked number in the top of the sixth as the inning opened with sophomore pinch hitter Amelia Putnam (Mansfield, Ga.) being hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) pushed Putnam to second, before Hosking was hit by a pitch and Capobianco singled through the left side to load the bases.

A fielding error scored Putnam and allowed junior Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) to reach first safely. Newberry increased its lead as Hosking scampered home on a wild pitch. After the Lady Hurricanes recorded the second out of the inning Bedard singled to center and advanced to second on the throw, while Capobianco and Ayres scored. Bedard scored from second on an infield single by Jamison to wrap up a five-run sixth inning for the Wolves.

Georgia Southwestern plated a fifth run in the bottom of the sixth, before Newberry added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. After Putnam was hit by a pitch in her second straight plate appearance, she was replaced by junior pinch runner Cassie Harrell (Williamston, N.C.) who advanced to second on a second sacrifice bunt from Gerndt. Following Gerndt's sac bunt, Hosking took the count to 3-2 before hitting a high home run to left center.

Capobianco followed Hosking's homer with a single to left and was soon joined on the bases by Ayres after the Washington-native was hit by a pitch. A passed ball moved Capobianco and Ayres to third and second, respectively, before a bunt by Basch plated Capobianco. Bedard knocked in the final run of the ball game as she singled to center to score Ayres.

Bedard finished the day 3-5 at the plate, with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Capobianco was 3-4 with two runs and two RBI on the night, while Hosking was 2-3 with three RBI, three runs scored and a home run.

Three Wolves pitchers combined for five strikeouts as junior Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) earned the victory in the circle with three innings pitched.

Newberry gets back into action tomorrow at 1 p.m. as the Wolves host Davis & Elkins at the Smith Road Complex.
