Drawe homers twice as Wolves split with Jaguars

NEWBERRY- The Wolves softball team earned a doubleheader split at home against Georgia Regions Augusta on Wednesday at the Smith Road Complex.

Freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) led the team at the plate, going 3 for 5 with two home runs and 3 RBI's, while junior Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) earned the win in game two in a complete game effort.

Newberry is now 3-1 on the season, while the Jaguars fall to 1-3. Newberry will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to play in the Hampton Jordan Classic on Saturday.

Game One: GRU-Augusta 8, Newberry 1

GRU-Augusta jumped on pitcher Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) early on in the first inning of Wednesday's first game.

A hit by pitch, throwing error and two hits plated two early on in the first inning. GRU-Augusta continued on to add seven more runs throughout the remainder of the game.

The Wolves remained scoreless until the bottom of the 7th when Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.), Amelia Putnam (Manfield, Ga.) and Ashlen Aryes (Kennewick, Wash.) all walked to load the bases with one out. GRU-Augusta replaced Paige Deschaine in the circle with Haley Birkle after three straight walks. Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) singled to center field to score Brugh. Newberry left the bases loaded as a strikeout ended the first game.

Another pair of home runs from Hailey Drawe in the second game helped the Wolves stay ahead of the Jaguars. Brittany Middleton pitched a full six full innings for a shutout with only three hits throughout the game.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Putnam reached base on an error by the second baseman. Shortly after Putnam reached first, Drawe launched a homer to deep centerfield over Smith Road to plate two runs.

Newberry continued to build upon its lead again in the bottom of the fifth when Ayres reached first on a walk. Followed by Cassie Harrell (Williamston, N.C.) sending a shot to right centerfield for a double. A single from Bedard to right center scored both Ayres and Harrel.

The Wolves defense remained solid throughout the whole second game helping the Wolves hold their 4-0 lead against the Jaguars. The final run was scored in the bottom of the sixth with Drawe's inside-the-park home run.
