Wolves stave off Tigers

Box Score

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves women’s basketball team returned from break as they dismantled the visiting Tigers of Benedict College, 72-40 on Tuesday night.

The Wolves were led by a career night from junior guard Emily Perry. Perry topped her previous career-high of 18 points against Catawba earlier this season by dropping 23 points on a blistering 8-10 from the field. She also tallied four assists and four rebounds. The Wolves had two other players in double figures as Samantha Creed had 17 points and freshman guard Nicola Handreck had 11 points.

Newberry led from start to finish as they opened the game on an impressive 16-0 run as Benedict didn’t score their first point of the contest until there was 12:33 left in the first half. The Wolves took a 37-14 lead into the break.

The second half of the game was more tightly contested as the Tigers began to implement a full court press that forced the Wolves into a season-high 31 turnovers on the evening. Despite the pressure, Newberry’s defense was swarming.

Benedict shot 17.2% from the field and went 0-8 from behind the arc. It marks the second time this season Newberry has held an opponent below 30 percent and is the lowest mark for both categories all season. Benedict did have a 48-41 advantage in rebounds but Newberry had the highest amount of fast break points this season with 12, passing their previous high of three.

Newberry returns to action in conference play on Saturday as they take on the Tusculum Pioneers at 2 p.m. inside Eleazer Arena.
