Newberry gears up for final game of 2014

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's basketball team returns from their Christmas break as they take on the Benedict College Tigers in their final non-conference game of the year.

The Wolves are coming off of an 86-76 loss at Lincoln Memorial and puts their overall record now at 6-4 with a 3-2 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. Newberry sits 5th in the SAC Standings as of today. The game against LMU marked the first time Newberry had a player reach the 20 point mark in a game and lost the game. The Wolves are still undefeated when their leading scorer, Samantha Creed, hits the 20 point mark.

Newberry will have a distinct advantage behind the arc. The Wolves lead the SAC in 3-pointers made per game at 7.8 as well as 3-point percentage at 37.1 percent while Benedict only shoots .197 percent and averages just over two made 3-pointers per game. The game against Benedict is the last nonconference game on the Wolves’ schedule for the 2014-15 season.

The Tigers are 5-2 overall on the season but have lost their last two games after a 5-0 start to the season. The Wolves and Tigers have only met twice since the 1996-97 season with their last meeting coming in 2007, prior to Sean Page taking the helm of the Wolves. The Wolves and Tigers have no common opponents this season and Benedict competes in Division II as part of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and is located in downtown Columbia.

At the point of their 5-0 start, the Tigers led their conference in scoring defense holding opponents to a measly 53.8 ppg and also boasted the best scoring margin at +10.0 ppg. London Richardson is their leading scorer at 15.2 ppg and is the only Benedict player to average double digits. She also averages 2.4 steals. KaDeeja Vaughn is their second leading scorer at 9.6 ppg and on the glass Britenique Harrison comes down with 6.6 boards a game while aslo shooting a blistering .606 from the field. Kari Jones, their main ball handler, dishes out 2.8 assists per contest to go along with 2.3 steals.

The game will tip at 6 p.m. inside Eleazer Arena and a video stream will be provided on NewberryWolves.tv for those unable to attend.
