Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Newberry Wolves women’s basketball team were plagued by a late second half run as they fell to the University of Southern Indiana on Sunday, 70-49.
Newberry (5-2, 3-0) had three players reach double figures in scoring as senior forward Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, NSW, Australia) had 14 points and eight rebounds. Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Vic, Australia) and Nicola Handreck (Heywood, Vic, Australia) each had 10 points for the Wolves in the loss.
The game remained close despite Newberry holding their last lead at 16-14 with 6:22 left in the first half. Newberry only trailed 26-23 at the break but eventually Southern Indiana’s (6-1) ability to get to the free throw line doomed the Wolves.
Southern Indiana went 17-19 from the free throw line, going 14-15 in the second half alone. Newberry only was sent to the line for four free throw attempts as they went 1-4 for the game. The Wolves also didn’t catch a break from behind the arc as they shot 6-21 for the game while their counterparts went 7-14.
Newberry kept the lead at 10 points or fewer the entire contest and were only trailing 47-40 with only 6:55 left in the contest. That’s when the Screaming Eagle embarked on a 23-9 run that lasted until the final whistle.
The Wolves will return home after the USI Thanksgiving Classic for a South Atlantic Conference matchup against Anderson at 6 p.m. at Eleazer Arena on Saturday Dec. 6.
