Wolves rout Darton in Newberry Duals, 48-3

NEWBERRY – The No. 19 Newberry College Wolves cruised to their second straight rout at the Eighth Annual Newberry Duals with a 48-3 win over Darton in Eleazer Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Trung Duong (Lynchburg, Va.) won the 125 lbs. bout by injury default and Jordan Simpson (Oxford, Ala.) won his 133 lbs. match by a 13-3 major decision to make it an early 10-0 lead for the scarlet and gray.

At 141 lbs., Nick Lankford (Braselton, Ga.) worked his way to a pin at the 6:01 mark. Seiji Borja (Charleston, S.C.) powered to a 16-0 technical fall in the opening seconds of the second period of the 149 lbs. bout to make it a 21-0 lead.

Dennis Flores (Hanahan, S.C.) got a takedown and converted it almost immediately into a pin at the 2:32 mark of the 157 lbs. bout. Newcomer Lukas Gilmore (Greenville, Mich.) was handed the Wolves’ first loss of the day, coming out on the wrong end of an 8-1 decision to allow the Cavs to narrow the deficit at 27-3.

Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.) clinched the dual victory with a pin in under a minute at 174 lbs. 184-pounder Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) followed that up with a two-minute pin, stretching Newberry’s advantage to 39-3.

Cody Brundage (Chapin, S.C.) won another victory by fall in the first period of the 197 lbs. bout and heavyweight Matt Colter (Jacksonville, N.C.) closed out another Newberry rout with a 3-1 win by decision in the second sudden victory period.
