Wolves pound Truett-McConnell in 56-0 shutout to open Newberry Duals

NEWBERRY – The No. 19 Newberry College Wolves opened their day of wrestling at the Eighth Annual Newberry Duals with a 56-0 win over Truett-McConnell in Eleazer Arena on Saturday morning.

After taking the first session off the Wolves got off to a hot start with a pin in just 1:25 of the 125 lbs. match from Trung Duong (Lynchburg, Va.).

Jordan Simpson (Oxford, Ala.) followed that up with a late pin in the third period of the 133 lbs. bout to push the Wolves’ lead to 12-0.

Nick Lankford (Braselton, Ga.) wrestled at 141 lbs. and pinned his opponent at the 5:47 mark of his bout. Seiji Borja (Charleston, S.C.) needed just over four minutes of wrestling to earn a 16-0 technical fall and push the Wolves’ advantage to 23-0 after his 149 lbs. match.

Dennis Flores (Hanahan, S.C.) earned an 8-3 decision at 157 lbs., followed by Lukas Gilmore (Greenville, Mich.) pinning his TMC opposition late in the second period at 165 lbs. to make it a 32-0 lead.

Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.) earned a pin at 174 lbs. in just under two minutes and returning All-American Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) pinned his opposing Bear at the 4:15 mark at 184 lbs. making it 44-0.

Local product Cody Brundage (Chapin, S.C.) got a pin just under four minutes into the 197 lbs. bout and Daniel Adkins (Gardendale, Ala.) closed out the shutout with a pin just under two minutes into the heavyweight bout

Newberry wrestles three more times today. The Wolves take on Darton at noon, Southern Virginia at 1:30 p.m. and Lindsey Wilson at 3 p.m.
