Box Score NEWBERRY – They’re nicknamed the Wolves but the women’s soccer team has doubled as road warriors this season staying unbeaten away from home with a 1-0 victory over Queens University on Saturday afternoon.
The lone goal for the Wolves (6-1-1, 4-1) came from senior Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) as she broke the deadlock with a late game winner leaving only 1:05 left on the clock. The win pushed Newberry’s road record to a spotless 5-0 this season and moved the Wolves into first place in the SAC standings.
For Brodie, it marked her third goal in as many games as she is coming off being named the SAC AstroTurf Co-Player of the Week.
Rachelle Serrano (Valencia, Calif.), in her first game for the Wolves, played a through ball that was dummied by Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) and left for a streaking Brodie who had a one on one with the keeper and hit a cool line drive to the back post for the game winner.
Newberry maintained control of possession throughout the contest. They held a decisive edge as they outshot the Royals 12-5 with an 8-3 margin in shots on goal.
Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) along with Brodie and Casey Wesley (Saugus, Calif.) each posted two shots on goal to lead Newberry. Defensively, the Wolves only allowed one shot total in the first half and four in the second but junior goalkeeper Alexis Carrillo (La Puente, Calif.) was only forced to make three saves in the contest.
Newberry will return home for a conference matchup on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader as they take on Anderson at 1 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex.
