Wolves stun Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Newberry Wolves picked up a huge South Atlantic Conference win on the road Saturday afternoon against the Tusculum College Pioneers. After struggling to get anything going Friday night, the Wolves made a 180 degree turn on Saturday afternoon. Newberry improves to 11-11 overall and 5-9 in South Atlantic Conference play. Tusculum drops to 10-12 and 9-5 in SAC play.

Newberry was totaled 42 on the afternoon which were distributed throughout seven players. Senior Holly Brisson led the Wolves with ten kills, while outside hitters Lauren Prachar and Logan Hayward each totaled seven apiece. Rachel Moran passed out 20 assists and Cydney Shaw put up 13 herself. Elayni Stokes tallied a match high 30 digs to pace the defense.

Offensive production was lacking for both teams as errors were plentiful, but the Wolves were able to emerge victorious as they weren’t fantastic in any category but were good all the way across the stat line. In team matchups, Newberry won every statistical category against the Pioneers, totaling match highs in kills (42), hitting percentage, assists (40), service aces (six), digs (73) and blocks (11).

The Pioneers got off to a fast start in the first set, jumping out to an eight point lead. That would prove sufficient as they would hold on to win 25-18.

The Wolves did not roll over and die in the second stanza, they got back up and put a fight. After being tied at 11-all, Newberry would score 10 of the next 13 points to push the score to 21-14. Tusculum would put together a four point run, but the Wolves would counter with their own four point run. A service error by Tusculum’s Moriah Jones would wrap up the frame for Newberry, 25-19.

The third set would be almost exactly identical to the second. Coming out of an 11-11 draw, Newberry would take the lead and would not give it up, scoring 14 points while only allowing the Pioneers’ to put up eight.

Newberry made a masterful comeback in the final frame, seeing a four point deficit turn into a 25-23 win. The Wolves were down 23-22 in the final points and notched three straight points to put the nails in the coffin for the Pioneers.

The Wolves return home to Eleazer Arena Tuesday night as they host the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at 7 p.m. for the Dig Pink match for breast cancer awareness. All fans attending are asked to wear pink!
