Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - With the highest offensive output against a NCAA Division II opponent since the 2010-11 season, the Newberry women's basketball team edged the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles 83-75 in what was the Wolves' third straight victory against Carson-Newman.
Newberry (10-6, 6-6 SAC) fell behind four points early to Carson-Newman (12-6, 9-3 SAC), but soon cut into the lead for the first time at the 16:08 mark as redshirt sophomore Emily Perry (Nambour, Queensland, Australia) hit a jumper that was soon followed by a layup from junior Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) to tie the game at 4-4.
Over the next ten minutes the Lady Eagles never led by more than two points as Newberry answered each of Carson-Newman's makes.
Newberry took its first lead of the game at the 11:02 mark as senior Tasia Holdorf (Anchorage, Alaska) tallied to put Newberry up 11-10. The lead extended to four on a 3-pionter by Holdorf on the following possession.
Much as the Lady Eagles saw leads reach no more than four points before the two sides saw the score reach even in the opening ten minutes, the final ten minutes of the second half saw Newberry's lead reach no more than three points. With the score tied 29-29 with 1:10 to go in the first period, senior Ellie Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) scored in the paint to give Newberry a two-point lead that would shrink to one before time expired for halftime.
The second half saw the Lady Eagles quickly take the lead and extend it out to four until Newberry knotted the game at 41-41 on a jumper from Holdorf with 15:44 remaining in regulation.
The tie game did not last long as Newberry hit three straight 3-pointers as Holdorf and Perry were joined by junior Zara Pearson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia) with 3-point makes. Pearson's three with 13:36 remaining gave Newberry a nine-point lead.
Newberry saw its lead fall to no fewer than seven points over the next three minutes as the Wolves looked to hold off the Lady Eagles.
Carson-Newman finally regained some momentum as the Lady Eagles cut Newberry's lead down to one with 6:47 remaining. A 3-pointer by Holdorf kept the Wolves lead temporarily, before Carson-Newman scored four-straight to tie the game for the 12th time on the afternoon.
Holdorf and Perry hit back-to-back jumpers to regain the lead for Newberry at 69-65. The Wolves pushed the lead to six points with 1:16 remaining on a made free throw from Gleeson. In the final minute, Pearson, Gleeson and sophomore Kirsten Dunsmore (Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) hit free throws to secure Newberry's 83-75 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Newberry exorcised its Holt Fieldhouse demons on Saturday as the Wolves shot 48.1-percent from the field, improving upon its performance a year ago that saw Newberry shoot 29.2-percent and score a season low 39 points. Newberry's 83-75 victory saw the Wolves a point shy of matching their season high 84 points from a December victory over Voorhees.
Gleeson was strong for Newberry across the board with 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Gleeson's seven assists give her 293 in her career, which is good for fifth most in school history. Gleeson is nine assists from matching former teammate Jessica Bearzatto for fourth most in program history.
Holdorf led Newberry with 24 points, while Pearson and Lepaio scored 17 and 15, respectively Perry rounded out Newberry's double-digit scorers with a 10-point outing.
Lepaio led Newberry with eight rebounds, while also tallying four assists. Pearson also finished the afternoon with four assists, pushing her over 200 career assists and putting her career total to 203.
Newberry heads to Queens on Wednesday for the first meeting with the Royals since Queens joined the South Atlantic Conference. Newberry and Queens tipoff in Charlotte at 6 p.m.
