Box Score

NEWBERRY - A 23-point outing by senior Tasia Holdorf and a 12-point burst off the bench by redshirt sophomore Emily Perry pushed Newberry to a 61-58 victory over Mars Hill, which marked the 100th victory in scarlet and gray for head women's basketball coach Sean Page.

Newberry (8-4, 4-4 SAC) shot out to a quick seven-point lead as junior Ellie Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) netted a jumper at 16:32 to put the Wolves up 7-0 before the first Mars Hill (2-10, 1-7 SAC) timeout of the afternoon.

The Lions fought back into the game and tied things up at 11-11 with 11:08 on the clock. With the game evened up, the two sides exchanged points and eventually the lead before the Lions managed to control the remainder of the first half. A layup by Sydney Comer put the Lions up by five, until with 14 seconds remaining Perry (Nambour, Queensland, Australia) cut the deficit to three before the half expired.

Newberry came out of the locker room with a six-point swing after Mars Hill scored the opening basket of the period. Mars Hill managed to keep the Wolves from regaining the lead over the first six minutes of the half, until Holdorf (Anchorage, Alaska) drained a three to put Newberry up by two.

Mars Hill shortly tied the game at 39-39, until a 3-pointer from Perry set off a run for the Wolves that eventually saw Newberry lead by 11 points with a little over five minutes remaining.

The Wolves led for the final 12 minutes of the game as Newberry fought off a scrappy Mars Hill squad.

Holdorf led all scorers with 23 points, while also tying senior Devanee Taylor (Chester, Va.) for a team high six rebounds. Perry was the Wolves other double-digit scorer as she netted a season high 12 points, including nine from beyond the arc.

Newberry shot 43.8-percent from the 3-point line, including a perfect 3-3 performance by Holdorf.

Gleeson and junior Kaitlynn Pacholke (Tampa, Fla.) led the Wolves with four assists on the afternoon. Junior Haylee Lepaio recorded three blocked shots, and was one of four Newberry starters to finish the day with at least one blocked shot.

The Wolves continue their homestand on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. tip-off against the visiting Lenoir-Rhyne Bears.
