Wolves swept by Augusta State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Newberry went on the road to Augusta State on Wednesday and came away empty-handed as the Jaguars earned the sweep.

Newberry falls to 15-19 on the season, while Augusta State improves to 16-24. Newberry will host Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader. Senior Day festivities will be held between games.

Game One: Augusta State 9, Newberry 6 (8 innings)
[Box Score]

Eleven runners left on base came back to haunt the Wolves, as Augusta State forced extra innings with a two-run seventh and scored eight of its nine runs via the home run to take a 9-6 victory.

The Jaguars were able to score a single run in the second inning on an RBI single. Three innings later, Lauren Yeargan hit a three-run home run to center field. A similar scene unfolded in the bottom of the seventh inning, as a Yeargan two-un blast tied the game with one out.

The Wolves struck early and often to take a 6-1 advantage in the third inning. Gabby Bedard plated Newberry's first run in the first inning. In the third, two Jaguar errors and four Newberry hits led to five runs. Amelia Putnam (Mansfield, Ga.) Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.) and Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Ky.) each had RBI singles in the inning.

Newberry was unable to score in the eighth inning. International tiebreak rules are used in collegiate softball in extra innings, meaning a baserunner is automatically placed on second base for each team from the eighth inning until the game ends. A bunt single put runners on the corners with no outs for Brooke Stephens, who ended the game with a walk-off home run to left center.

Hannah Blakley (Manning, S.C.) took the loss in relief for the Wolves. Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) pitched seven innings, allowing six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out six.

Game Two: Augusta State 4, Newberry 2
[Box Score]

A two-run home run by Darrian Jamison was not enough for the Wolves, as Newberry fell 4-2 in the second game of Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader.

Augusta State struck first, taking advantage of two Newberry errors to plate four unearned runs in the second inning.

Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) led off the Newberry fourth with a double to center field. Moments later, Darrian Jamison crushed a home run to left center to cut the deficit in half. Jamison would finish 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in the two games.

The Wolves would be able to pull no closer, however, as Newberry could only manage one hit over the final three frames.

Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) was the hard-luck loser for the Wolves, throwing a complete-game six innings and scattering seven hits. None of the four runs she allowed was earned, and she walked just one batter while striking out two.
