SALISBURY, N.C. - Newberry earned a doubleheader split on the road at Catawba in its final games of the 2013 season.

Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) led the Wolves at the plate, going 5-for-7 with a walk and three runs scored on the day, while senior Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) earned the win in Game One on a complete game effort.

Newberry's final record is 16-24, with a 4-14 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. The Wolves will not advance to the Food Lion SAC Tournament, played in Salisbury next week. The Lady Indians are now 29-17, 10-8 in the conference, and will be the fifth seed in tournament play.

[Box Score]

A complete game from senior pitcher Kaylyn Camacho sealed the victory for the Wolves in Saturday's first game, the team's first victory since a doubleheader sweep of Wingate on March 22.

In the circle for the final time in a Newberry uniform, Camacho allowed just one run on seven hits in the contest, tallying five strikeouts and issuing one free pass. She was able to pitch her way in and out of trouble early in the contest. In the first inning, two singles followed by a sacrifice bunt placed two runners in scoring position with one out. The next batter struck out, but reached first and a run scored on a wild pitch. But Camacho was able to strike out the next two batters she faced, making three consecutive strikeouts in the inning, to limit the damage to just one run.

Camacho would not allow another runner to reach base until a two-out double in the fourth inning, retiring ten consecutive batters. She stranded three runners in the inning on a ground ball to third after an infield single and a walk loaded the bases.

Newberry struck for the game's first run in the early going. Gabby Bedard led off the game with a walk, then advanced to second on a two-out walk by Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Ky.). A Paige Brugh RBI single brought Bedard around to score and gave the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.

After the Lady Indians tied the game in the bottom of the frame, Newberry was able to regain the lead in the sixth inning. Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) scored an unearned run after reaching base on a fielding error and being brought home by an Amelia Putnam (Mansfield, Ga.) RBI single four batters later.

Newberry's defense would help it retain the lead half an inning latter. Two consecutive singles put the go-ahead run on base with one out. But Camacho induced a ground ball to third base, where Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) stepped on the bag and threw across to first for an inning-ending double play. The Lady Indians were sat down in order in the seventh to give Newberry the win.

Bedard led the way at the plate for the Wolves, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Putnam was 1-for-4 with her game-winning RBI, while Brugh was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) added a hit and a walk in two official at-bats.

Game Two: Catawba 12, Newberry 5
[Box Score]

Newberry got a solid offensive performance in the final game of Saturday's doubleheader, but was done in by a huge first inning by the Lady Indians.

Newberry had taken the lead on an unearned run by Gabby Bedard, who scored on a squeeze bunt by senior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.). But two bases-loaded singles with no outs in the bottom of the inning gave Catawba an early 2-1 lead. A flyout to left field resulted in the first out of the inning, but another bases-loaded single followed by a grand slam gave the Lady Indians a 7-1 lead. All told, Catawba sent 11 batters to the plate in what was a disastrous inning for the Wolves.

Newberry got four runs back in the third inning. Two singles and a fielder's choice allowed Bedard to score the first run of the frame. After a walk, a bases-loaded single by senior Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) plated two runs, then an RBI groundout by Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) rounded out the scoring for the Wolves in the inning.

The Wolves, would not score again, however, as Catawba added two runs in the second inning and single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth to build a 12-5 advantage.

The six Newberry seniors took advantage of their chances at the plate on the day. Crawford has made the most of her limited opportunities this season, going 1-for-3 with two RBI's in Saturday's second game to finish the year with a .385 batting average. Phillips was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Diaz finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) took the loss in the last game of her decorated career at Newberry.
