Jamison and Diaz tally two RBIs each as Anderson sweeps doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY - Newberry's six seniors each gave valiant efforts to end their final home games in a Wolves uniform with a win, but Anderson's potent offensive attack proved too much for Newberry to handle as the Trojans swept the doubleheader by scores of 9-4 and 12-1.

Newberry falls to 15-23 on the season and 3-13 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Wolves travel to Catawba on Saturday for their last two games of the 2013 season. First place Anderson now holds a 35-9 overall record and a 12-4 conference mark, good for a one game lead over second place Tusculum.

Game One: Anderson 9, Newberry 4
[Box Score]

Anderson jumped on senior Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) in her final appearance in the circle early in Wednesday's first game to take a lead it would not relinquish en route to a 9-4 victory.

Two walks and a single to left field plated a run in the first inning. Anderson then got a grand slam from first baseman Danielle Swygert to push its advantage to 5-0.

Newberry responded with two unearned runs in the third inning, helped along by three Trojan miscues in the field. Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) reached base and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher with the bases clear and one out on an attempted bunt. A bunt single by senior Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) put runners on the corners. Diaz attempted to steal second base and Bedard broke for the plate after the catcher began to throw down. But the pitcher cut the throw off and threw back to the catcher to try to pick off Bedard, who threw to the third baseman as Bedard scrambled back toward the bag. When she changed directions, the third baseman threw back to the pitcher, but the ball squirted away, allowing Bedard to score and Diaz to take third. Four pitches later, Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Ky.), who came into the contest hitting .404 after a 4-for-6 afternoon against Lincoln Memorial, laced an RBI single to center and advanced to second on a throwing error by the center fielder. The inning ended with the Wolves scoring twice on three hits and three Trojan errors.

Anderson added two runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take a 9-2 lead into the home half of the final inning. With two runners in scoring position and two outs, Diaz ripped a single into left field to cut the lead to 9-4, but the Wolves would get no closer. Diaz, a senior, led Newberry in Game One with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate and two runs batted in.

Bedard also had a notable day at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Jamison pitched in a 1-for-3 effort with her third-inning RBI.

Game Two: Anderson 12, Newberry 1
[Box Score]

Anderson used a five-run fifth and a six-run seventh inning to coast to a 12-1 victory in the final home game of the season for the Wolves.

Newberry took an early 1-0 lead in the contest. Gabby Bedard opened the game with a single into left field and was advanced to second on a Tasia Diaz sacrifice bunt. Amelia Putnam (Mansfield, Ga.) then guided a single through the right side to score the first run of the game.

The Trojans hit two home runs in the contest and were able to score on each of Newberry's three pitchers used in the game, including the first appearance of the season from sophomore Caitlyn Smith (Palm Harbor, Fla.). The Trojans batted around in the fifth inning and sent 12 batters to the plate in the seventh, totaling 11 runs on 11 hits and one Newberry error in the innings.

Despite the result, the Wolves tallied eight hits of their own in the contest. Bedard was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Putnam went 1-for-4 with the only RBI of the game for Newberry. Jamison had another impressive game, going 1-for-3 and drawing a walk to put her on-base percentage for the season at an even .500 and her batting average at .396. Senior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) was 1-for 3, while senior Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) earned a pinch hit in her only at-bat. Senior Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) pitched in with a 1-for-2 day at the plate and drew a walk.
