Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Newberry lost both ends of a doubleheader Friday afternoon, falling 7-1 and 4-1 to Tusculum. With the losses, the Wolves fall to 10-8 on the season and 0-2 in South Atlantic Conference play, while the Pioneers improve to 8-11 and 2-0.

The Wolves return to action tomorrow in a nonconference road doubleheader at King at 2 p.m. Newberry will then play a home doubleheader against South Atlantic Conference foe Mars Hill on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Game One: Tusculum 7, Newberry 1
[Box Score]

The homestanding Pioneers pounded out ten hits off Newberry pitchers en route to a 7-1 victory in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.

Entering the third inning with a 1-0 lead, Tusculum erupted for four runs off of Wolves' pitcher Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) to take a commanding lead. A single, an error, a double steal, and a two-RBI double got the scoring started, then a two-RBI triple four batters later stretched the lead to five runs.

The Wolves attempted to mount a comeback in the sixth inning down 6-0. Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.) led off with a double down the left field line. After a sacrifice bunt, Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) laid down a bunt single to the pitcher to score pinch runner Casey Nellums (Duluth, Ga.). Capobianco and Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) advanced into scoring position with two outs before a strikeout ended the Newberry threat.

Elizabeth Johnson pitched a complete game for the Pioneers, giving up just three hits in seven innings. Jeffcoat took the loss for Newberry, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out four batters in three innings of work. Hannah Blakley (Manning, S.C.) was solid in relief, allowing two runs on four hits in three innings pitched.

Game Two: Tusculum 4, Newberry 1
[Box Score]

Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI double at the plate, but it was not enough to lead the Wolves to a victory in the second game of the teams' doubleheader.

Tusculum struck for a run on an RBI double in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Wolves loaded the bases an inning later, but were unable to push a run across. In the bottom of the frame, Tusculum struck for two unearned runs after a dropped fly ball and a double, giving the Pioneers a three-run cushion.

Newberry battled back in the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 3-1 on a Paige Brugh single, a sacrifice bunt, and a Crawford double. Another scoring opportunity went unrealized in the sixth inning, as two two-out singles and an error loaded the bases before a strikeout ended the inning. The Pioneers would extend their lead by a run in the bottom of the sixth and hold off a Newberry scoring threat in the seventh to end the game.

Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) took the loss for the Wolves, giving up four runs and eight hits in six innings pitched. Only two of the runs were earned. She walked just one batter while striking out six.
