Carson-Newman wins pair over Wolves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman used a dominant offensive performance to take a victory in Friday's first game, then walked off in dramatic fashion in the second to sweep a doubleheader from Newberry.

The Lady Eagles improve to 24-12 on the season, 8-4 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Newberry falls to 15-17 overall and 3-9 in the conference. The Wolves will travel to Augusta State for a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday before returning home to face Lincoln Memorial in a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader on Senior Day.

Game One: Carson-Newman 7, Newberry 2
[Box Score]

Carson-Newman struck for runs in the first, second, and fourth innings to build a comfortable lead and coasted to a 7-2 victory in Friday's first game.

Wolves' starter Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) retired the first two batters of the game before walking four consecutive Lady Eagles to give up the game's first run. A fielding error allowed a batter later allowed a second run, but Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) collected the ball and threw home to prevent another run from scoring and end the inning.

The Lady Eagles added a run in the second on a squeeze bunt to take a three-run lead. Newberry missed out on a crucial opportunity to close the gap in the next half inning. Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) recorded the only hit of the inning and came around to score an unearned run, but the Wolves had a runner thrown out at the plate and left the bases loaded.

Carson-Newman was able to pull away in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three runs before recording an out and totaling four runs in the frame, to take a 7-1 lead. Newberry attempted to claw back into the game in the sixth inning but was not able to score despite leaving the bases loaded. The first two Newberry batters in the seventh inning were retired before the Wolves were able to score one run on three hits, including a Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) RBI single, before a fielder's choice ended the game.

Stevens had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with her seventh inning RBI. Jamison was 2-for-2 with a walk to increase her team-leading on-base percentage to .455, and Diaz was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Hannah Blakley (Manning, S.C.) pitched two innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out two.

Game Two: Carson-Newman 2, Newberry 1
[Box Score]

Newberry piled up nine hits in Friday's second game, but it was Carson-Newman that got the hit that counted most in its series-clinching 2-1 victory.

The Wolves loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning of a 1-1 game, but Lady Eagles' pitcher Cassie Lyons, who pitched a complete game, was able to induce a groundout to end the threat. In the seventh inning with the score still tied, a Wolves' baserunner was thrown out attempting to go from first to third on a Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) single to left field for the third out.

In the bottom of the frame, a leadoff double put a runner in scoring position for Carson-Newman with no outs. Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) retired the next two batters via a strikeout and a flyout, but Kelli Hensley took a 1-1 pitch down the right field line to give the Lady Eagles a walk-off 2-1 victory.

Jeffcoat was spectacular in defeat for the Wolves. She needed just 98 pitches to record twenty outs, scattering five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings while striking out five. Carson-Newman's Lyons gave up nine hits in her complete game effort but only allowed a single run as the Wolves stranded seven runners on base.

Newberry took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Pinch hitter Amelia Putnam (Mansfield, Ga.) reached on a fielder's choice and was brought home by Brittany Phillips's RBI triple to right field. Carson-Newman tied the game moments later, however, on a home run with two outs in the bottom half of the inning.

Phillips and Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) were 2-for-3 on the afternoon for Newberry, with Phillips recording her eleventh RBI of the season. Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) recorded her team-leading twelfth multiple-hit game on the season with her 2-for-4 effort.
