AIKEN - Newberry used a sixth-inning rally to earn a 3-1 win in the opening game at USC Aiken on Wednesday night before falling 4-3 in the nightcap after the Pacers put together a sixth-inning rally of their own.

USC Aiken's record now stands at 17-11-1 on the season. Newberry is 13-13 and will return home to face conference opponent Wingate on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Wolves then host nonconference foe Flagler in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader beginning at noon.

Game One: Newberry 3, USC Aiken 1

Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) pitched a complete-game three-hitter as the Wolves earned a tightly-contested 3-1 game in Wednesday's opener.

Both team's starters were dialed in from the game's first pitch. Camacho combined with USC Aiken's India Kornegay to hold both lineups to just six hits on the day. Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) was the first Wolves' batter to record a hit, ripping a single to left field in the third inning. The Wolves had two batters reach via Pacers' errors in the fourth inning but were unable to score.

Newberry struck for all three of its runs in the sixth inning. Designated player Casey Nellums (Duluth, Ga.) reached on an error with one out. Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) followed with a single up the middle. Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) brought Nellums home with an RBI single on a 1-0 count. Yancey crossed the plate after an error allowed Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) to reach safely, then Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) extended the lead to 3-0 with an RBI groundout to second base. Newberry struck for three runs on two hits and two Pacer errors in the inning.

USC Aiken was able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly, but would come no closer. The Pacers' bats were stymied all day, as Camacho allowed one hit in the first, fifth, and sixth innings. Camacho finished the game with a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

Yancey paced the Wolves at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a run scored. Hosking had a hit and an RBI in her only at-bat and would also come around to score.

Game Two: USC Aiken 4, Newberry 3

The Wolves exploded for three runs in the sixth inning, only to see USC Aiken regain the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame and earn a doubleheader split.

Newberry trailed 2-0 after five innings, but were able to load the bases with one out courtesy of a hit batsman, an error, and a walk. Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) singled to right field to score one run, then Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) followed with an RBI single of her own to tie the game at two. With the bases still loaded, Casey Nellums recorded an RBI groundout to give the Wolves the lead.

But the Pacers struck back moments later to move in front. A two-out rally consisting of three consecutive hits plated two runs, making the score 4-3 in favor of USC Aiken.
Lexington, S.C. native Shelley Jeffcoat took the loss for Newberry, surrendering four runs on nine hits in a complete-game six innings of work. India Kornegay, the losing pitcher in Game One for the Pacers, earned the win in Game Two with 1.2 innings of relief work.

The Wolves amassed an impressive seven hits on the evening, but left at least one runner stranded in each of the first six innings. Newberry would leave ten runners on base in total.

Katie Capobianco was 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate for Newberry, while Gabby Bedard and Casey Nellums added a hit and an RBI each.
