Newberry eases to 7-2 home win over Reinhardt

NEWBERRY - A strong showing throughout the lineup pushed the Newberry women's tennis team to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Reinhardt Lady Eagles at the Cannon Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves (7-6) earned two doubles points as No. 1 pair of juniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) notched an 8-1 win over Maria Bejarno and Lindsay McCutchen of Reinhardt (2-3). The second doubles point came at No. 3 where juniors Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) earned an 8-2 win over Tara Mathis and Alyssa Siebold.

Singles action saw a near sweep for the Wolves as Newberry earned five team points in singles play. Aguirre was the lone Newberry player to earn a shutout as she defeated Bejarno 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

Adum dropped only one game as she picked up a two-set victory over Mathis at No. 2. Ziehe notched a straight sets victory at No. 4, while freshman Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) also won in two sets at No. 5.

Newberry's final singles point came as McManus cruised to a victory in two sets at No. 6 against McCutchen.

The Wolves are scheduled to travel to Limestone on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match against the Saints.
