GREENWOOD - Newberry went on the road and took two nail-biting contests on Wednesday to take a pair of games from the Lander Bearcats. On the day, the Wolves outhit Lander 13-6 and committed two errors to the Bearcats' 11.

Newberry will put its 10-4 record on the line this weekend as the Wolves travel to Spartanburg for the Mid-South Classic. Newberry will face No. 4 North Georgia and USC Aiken on Saturday before playing No. 10 Armstrong and Columbus State on Sunday. The Wolves will then play a pair of twinbills on the road before returning home to face conference foe Mars Hill on March 13.

Game One: Newberry 6, Lander 4

Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Wolves to a 6-4 victory in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.

The game was a tight affair until the seventh inning, when Newberry used a four-run outburst aided by six Bearcat errors to take a 6-1 lead. The Wolves then held off a Lander rally in the bottom of the frame to claim the victory.

Leading 2-1 going into the seventh and final inning, the Newberry offense continually put the ball in play while Lander's mistakes kept the inning alive. With one out, Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) followed with an infield single, while Basch advanced to third on an error by the third baseman. Yancey followed with her second RBI single to right field on the day.

Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Yancey to advance all the way to third on a throwing error by the same player. A two-base throwing error by the catcher on an attempted steal brought home another run, then Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) tripled down the right field line to close out the scoring. All told, the Wolves struck for four runs on three hits and six Bearcat errors to turn a slim 2-1 margin into a five-run cushion.

The Wolves would need the extra runs, however, to hold off a furious Lander rally in the bottom of the frame. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs. After a popup and a strikeout, a throwing error allowed a run to score. The Bearcats drew closer with a two-run single that brought the winning run to the plate. But Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.), pitching in relief, induced a game-ending strikeout to strand the tying run at second base.

Newberry's offense wasn't opportunistic in the early going, leaving the bases loaded in the second inning to keep the game in a scoreless tie. But the Wolves broke through in the third, courtesy of a Yancey RBI single.

Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) earned the win to improve her record on the season to 6-1. Jeffcoat pitched five innings, allowing one earned run on just one hit, a fourth-inning infield single. Hannah Blakely (Manning, S.C.) pitched an inning of relief work before giving way to Camacho, who earned her first save of the year.

Brittany Phillips and Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) joined Yancey in going 2-for-4 on the day.

Game Two: Newberry 2, Lander 1

Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Wolves to a second consecutive victory over Lander.

Newberry did all of its scoring during a two-run third inning. A hit batsman and a throwing error put runners on the corners with no outs for Bedard, who singled to left field to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. An RBI infield single by Brittany Phillips three batters later allowed Bedard to score.

Starting pitcher Kaylyn Camacho was able to pitch around a first-inning triple to keep Lander out of the scoring column. The Bearcats didn't threaten again until the fourth, when Chasity Davis homered to left field. In the seventh inning, Lander used two walks to put the potential game-winning run on first base, but Camacho induced a flyout to end the game.

Camacho pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits. With nine strikeouts in her eight innings of work in the doubleheader, she increased her season total to 43.

With her 3-for-8 performance on the day, Brittany Phillips increased her team-leading hitting streak to seven games.
