Box Score 2 GAFFNEY - Newberry was unable to come away from Gaffney with a win against California (Pa.), dropping two contests to the undefeated Vulcans.
Because of weather issues in Gaffney, the Wolves (8-4) were unable to complete regularly scheduled games against Limestone and No. 18 West Virginia Wesleyan this weekend. Newberry will next be in action Wednesday in Greenwood against Lander before competing at the Mid-South Classic in Spartanburg next weekend.
Game One: California (Pa.) 6, Newberry 3
[Box Score]
The Vulcans of California (Pa.) jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and were able to hold off a late Newberry rally en route to a 6-3 victory in the day's first game.
Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.), fresh off a no-hitter on Wednesday at home against King, took the loss for Newberry and struggled early. The first two Vulcan hitters reached on singles that didn't leave the infield, then Camacho hit a batter and walked the next two. With California leading 2-0, Camacho gave way to Hannah Blakely (Manning, S.C.), who gave up a two-RBI single that gave the Vulcans a 4-0 lead. California sent ten hitters to the plate in the inning.
The Wolves were able to cut the deficit in half an inning later. With one out in the second, Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) smacked a home run to left-center, her second of the season. Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Ky.) reached on a walk, then pinch runner Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) scored on an RBI single by Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.), her second hit on the day. The Wolves would get no closer, however, as the Vulcans tacked on two more runs in the fifth and held off a late rally.
Blakely was solid in relief, throwing 4.2 innings while allowing two runs and scattering five hits. Camacho reentered the game with two outs in the fifth inning, giving up no runs and three hits in her return to the circle.
Game Two: California (Pa.) 8, Newberry 2
[Box Score]
California again jumped out to an early lead in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, tacking on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to coast to an 8-2 victory.
Shining brightly in defeat was Paige Bruh (Indian Land, S.C.), who got the start at first base and went 3-for-4 with three singles in the game. Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) and Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) each added two singles of their own.
Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) suffered her first loss of the season and is now 5-1 in 2013. She gave up eight runs, only four of which were earned, on seven hits in her complete game effort. Her ERA now stands at 1.37.
California got the scoring started in the second inning, plating three unearned runs after a throwing error by the Wolves. The teams traded runs in the third inning before a single run in the fourth made the deficit 4-2. In the fifth inning, however, a double and a home run doubled the advantage to 6-2. An inning later, a single, a triple, and a groundout gave the Vulcans their final advantage.
After Saturday's games, three Wolves have significant hitting streaks. Gabby Bedard has hit safely in each of her last six contests, while Brittany Phillips and Jennifer Yancey have five- and four-game streaks, respectively.
