NEWBERRY - The No. 4 Newberry Wolves struggled early but rebounded to defeat Lake Erie 23-15 in the second session of the Seventh Annual Newberry Duals.
Newberry (4-0) benefitted from a pair of forfeit wins at 125 lbs. for Jeff Vesta and 141 lbs. for B.J. Young.
At 133 lbs., Brandon Thompson was defeated by major decision before Seiji Borja returned the favor to the Storm at 149 lbs. with his own major decsion.
The featured matchup of the day went Lake Erie's way, as No. 2 Zak Vargo earned a 10-3 decision over No. 6 Taylor Knapp at 157 lbs., although the Storm's reaction cost Lake Erie a team point.
Close decisions went Lake Erie's way at 165 lbs. and 174 lbs. before Jared Holliday took a 6-2 decision at 184 lbs. The 197 lbs. match appeared to be headed to sudden victory before LEC drew within four points with a last second takedown for a win.
Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) won the heavyweight bout by major decision to earn the win and push the Wolves to victory.
