Career outings push Wolves to 84-69 win over Lady Tigers

NEWBERRY - Career days for seniors Ellie Gleeson and Tasia Holdorf, joined by a near career day by junior Zara Pearson helped propel the Newberry women's basketball team to an 84-69 victory over the visiting Voorhees Lady Tigers inside of Eleazer Arena on Tuesday night.

The Wolves (5-3) started off slow as the Lady Tigers (6-4) Jumped out to an early four point lead after Amber Johnson made a free throw at 18:03 in the first period to put Voorhees ahead 6-2.

Newberry bounced back in the first period as the lead changed hands twice and was knotted on five occasions, however Voorhees pushed its lead to as many as nine points before time expired and sent the Lady Tigers to the locker room with a six point advantage.

Voorhees saw its lead reach double digits with 14:30 left in the second half, but saw the Wolves reply with a 3-pointer from junior Kaitlynn Pacholke (Tampa, Fla.). Pacholke's three was followed by a pair of made free throws from Holdorf (Anchorage, Alaska) to pull the Wolves within six.

The two teams exchanged makes until sophomore Emily Perry (Nambour, Queensland, Australia), followed a make from senior Devanee Taylor (Chester, Va.) with a jumper of her own, which was soon joined by a make from Holdorf to pull Newberry within three of the Lady Tigers.

Holdorf hit again with 9:14 remaining to cut the deficit to one. A jumper on the other end of the court by Voorhees was answered as Holdorf tied the game up with a 3-pointer.

The two sides exchanged points as the Wolves took a lead and soon turned the advantage back over to the Lady Tigers as Kritofia Smart drained a 3-pointer with 7:20 remaining to put Voorhees up 59-58.

After the two sides struggled on offensive opportunities, Pearson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia) scored off the fast break to put Newberry ahead by a point. Pacholke pushed the lead to four with a 3-pointer as the Wolves carried the advantage the remainder of the evening.

Newberry continued to push the ball on the offensive end until the final whistle as Holdorf hit a layup and the following free throw with three seconds on the clock to give Newberry a 15-point advantage. The Wolves 15-point advantage would be the final differential as Newberry left Eleazer Arena with an 84-69 victory over the Lady Tigers.

Holdorf finished the night with a career high 27 points, while adding three rebounds and two assists to the box score. Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) tallied a career high 13 points, along with two assists and three boards. Taylor recorded her second career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds on the night.

Pearson finished a point shy of tying her career high, as she finished with 17 points and seven assists, which ties her career high for assists. Pearson also added three steals on the defensive end of the court. Pacholke tripled her previous career high as she finished the game a perfect 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from beyond the arc for a nine-point performance.

Newberry wraps up non-conference play on Tuesday the 17th, with a 6 p.m. home game against Claflin.
