Box Score

NEWBERRY - Wolves' junior Haylee Lepaio surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career as Newberry fell 62-50 to Catawba, despite a double-double from Lepaio.

Newberry (3-2, 1-2 SAC) led for the early part of the game against the Lady Indians (4-1, 3-0 SAC), reaching a nine-point difference twice in the first half, the last of which came at 10:58 on the clock as Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) scored off an assist from freshman Aaliyah Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis.).

Catawba began to cut into the Wolves' lead at 10:42 when Janna Dixon hit three free throws to pull the Lady Indians within six. Catawba continued to shrink the Newberry lead, until the 5:12 mark when Lepaio scored on a layup off an assist from junior Zara Pearson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia) to put Newberry ahead by seven.

The 26-19 lead for Newberry was short lived as the Lady Indians pulled within one of Newberry, before talking a three-point lead on back-to-back possessions. Wolves' junior Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Victoria, Australia) used the final second of the half to find sophomore Emily Perry (Nambour, Queensland, Australia) for a 3-point make as time expired on a 29-29 ballgame.

The second half started off with Catawba leaping out to a nine point lead in the opening five minutes, capped by a 3-pointer from Dixon. Over the following three minutes Newberry cut the deficit to three, but a Chloe Bully 3-pionter pushed the momentum in Catawba's direction as the Lady Indians pushed their lead to double-digits after a jumper from Antionette McPhail at 2:20 on the clock.

The 10-point Catawba lead reached 12 after Mallary Clay hit a pair of free throws. Clay's free throw makes were the final points of the evening as the Lady Indians exited Eleazer Arena with a 62-50 victory.

The Wolves outrebounded Catawba 40-38, but fell behind 22-11 in the turnover column.

Lepaio led the Wolves with 18 points and 12 rebounds, marking her first double-double of the season and 24th of her career. Leapio's 18 points give her 1,002 on her career and put her 228 points out of the career top 10 in scoring at Newberry.

Creed finished the evening with six points, while Pearson added eight. Off the bench, senior Devanee Taylor (Chester, Va.) grabbed eight rebounds. Lepaio finished the night with two blocked shots, while Pearson dished out six assists for the Wolves.

Newberry stays at home on Saturday as the Wolves host Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m.
