Box Score BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves shot 59.3 percent from the field in the second half to overcome a halftime deficit and ease to a 94-71 South Atlantic Conference win over the Brevard Tornados at Boshamer Gym on Saturday.
Newberry moves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The 4-0 start is Newberry's first since winning the first six games of the 2008-09 season. The Wolves host Catawba on Tuesday night. Brevard is now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Demarkus Smith (Johnston, S.C.) led all scorers with 19 points, connecting on four three-pointers, dishing out three assists and grabbing three steals.
Dondray Walker (Fountain Inn, S.C.) connected on three three-pointers on the way to 17 points. Cole Birchfield (Trenton, Ga.) also had a trio of long-range connections en route to 14 points.
Gerald Evans (Inglewood, Calif.) had a solid all-around game with six points, six assists and four steals. Newberry connected on 13 three-pointers in the game as a team.
The Wolves were behind at halftime by a 43-42 score as the host Tornados shot 58.1 percent from the field and Newberry was only able to connect on 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) in the half.
That all changed in the second half, as Newberry scorched the nets for a 59.3 percent rate (16-of-27), including 6-of-12 from long range. The Wolves' ball control was also excellent in the half, committing only four turnovers and snagging eight steals, outscoring Brevard by 24 points.
