NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves had six players score in double figures with two more scoring eight points as the scarlet and gray earned a dominant 94-72 win over the Armstrong Atlantic State University Pirates in the 2013-14 season opener at Eleazer Arena on Sunday.

Newberry (1-0) started a stretch of three games in four days with the win. The Wolves host Barber-Scotia at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, following the volleyball match against Anderson. Newberry then travels to Norfolk, Va., for an exhibition contest at Norfolk State at 7 p.m. Wednesday, which will count as a regular season game for NSU.

Cole Birchfield (Trenton, Ga.) scored 16 points for Newberry in his collegiate debut, including three three-pointers.

Demarkus Smith (Johnston, S.C.) scored 12 points while passing out seven assists with three rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot. Dondray Walker (Fountain Inn, S.C.) scored 11 points with four rebounds.

Brandon Taylor (Coshocton, Ohio) scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Mitch Riggs (Langwarrin, Victoria, Australia) scored 10 points and Brunes Charles (Naples, Fla.) scored 10 points with two steals. Xavier Holmes (Great Falls, S.C.) had eight points and seven rebounds and Gerald Evans (Inglewood, Calif.) had eight points and passed out five assists. Vincent Hicklin (Columbia, S.C.) had six points and eight rebounds in his collegiate debut in only nine minutes.

Newberry was on fire in the first half, shooting 54.1 percent (20-of-37) from the field, 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from three-point range and 100 percent (8-of-8) from the free throw line.

Charles scored on a layup on the first possession of the game and back-to-back treys from Birchfield and Walker quickly put the Wolves up by five. An 8-2 run ending in a Riggs triple at the 11:27 mark gave Newberry its first double figure lead of the game at 20-10.

With three minutes in the half, Newberry was up by 14 and surged to the end of the half, going on a 13-3 run to take a 55-31 halftime lead. The Wolves scored 14 points in the half on the fast break, with 14 points off of turnovers and 26 points in the paint.

Holmes put Newberry up by 26 on the Wolves first possession of the second half and never saw the lead dip below 20 points in the second half. Walker's three-point play at the 11:03 mark put the Wolves up by 32 at a 79-47 advantage.

For the game, Newberry had a 50.8 percent field goal percentage, making 33-of-65 baskets. The Wolves made 47.4 percent of shots from three-point range with nine made goals from long distance. The Wolves made 19-of-25 free throws for a 76 percent rate. Newberry had 21 assists on 33 made baskets to only 16 turnovers.
