Wolves wrap up NSU Guy Harvey Invitational in 12th

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - The Newberry College women's golf team wrapped up the 2013 Nova Southeastern Guy Harvey Invitational in 12th place with a 36-hole score of 323-329=652 at the PGA National Resort's Palmer Course.

The Wolves, who are ranked 22nd nationally in the WGCA Coaches' Poll, battled a tough course in a field that featured nine of the top 25 teams in Division II.

Newberry was led by freshman Marianna Monaco (Yonkers, N.Y.), who has been the Wolves' top finisher in both fall tournaments so far. Monaco shot a 156 (+12) over the two rounds to finish in a tie for 25th individually.

Sophia Opitz (Landskrona, Sweden) tied for 47 with a 163 (+19), while Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) tied for 53rd with a 165 (+21). Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) tied for 73rd with a 172 (+28) and Annabelle Dallery (Sumter, S.C.) tied for 78th with a 174 (+30).

Newberry finished two strokes ahead of conference rival Carson-Newman and just eight strokes behind Nova Southeastern, who was ranked second nationally in the latest coaches' poll. Top-ranked Lynn took the title with a tournament record 290 in the final round and an event record 581 for two rounds. Samantha Smolen of Lynn earned medalist honors.

The Wolves will look to improve next week as they head to Salisbury, N.C., on Monday and Tuesday to defend their title at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational.
