Wolves back on winning track with sweep of Coker

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves used a dominant performance in all phases of the match to earn a 25-11, 25-18, 25-14 sweep of the Coker Cobras in South Atlantic Conference action in Eleazer Arena on Saturday.

Newberry snaps a five-match losing streak and moves to 11-8 overall and 6-7 in SAC play, while Coker falls to 3-18 overall and 0-13 in the league.

Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) hit .281 with 15 kills and 12 digs, while Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) had 10 kills. Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had a match-high 18 digs, with Lisa Ross (Bowling Green, Ky.) earning 10 digs and three service aces. Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) passed out 37 assists.

Newberry hit .253 as a team in the match and limited Coker to only 15 kills and a minus-.042 hitting rate. The Wolves stormed out of the gates and jumped out to a 15-4 lead and never looked back. Newberry led by as many as 13 points in the set and the set point on a Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) kill gave the Wolves their largest margin of the season at 25-11. Newberry hit .250 in the set with four errorless kills from King and three apiece from Hayward and Soper.

In the second set, the Cobras took the lead early before Newberry surged back. From an 8-8 tie, Newberry pushed out to an 18-12 lead and never let the Cobras back within reach. The Wolves hit .300 in the set and saw Hayward and Soper each had five kills in the set.

Coker started well in the third set, forcing a Wolves timeout at a 12-9 Cobras lead. Newberry answered with a huge run, pushing out to an 18-12 lead. A Coker point proved to be just a minor speed bump as the Wolves powered their way to the victory. Newberry hit .207 in the set and Soper had seven kills in the set.
