Box Score NEWBERRY - An early goal from junior Gabrielle Brodie and a stout defensive performance was all the Newberry women's soccer team required as the Wolves registered their seventh clean sheet of the season in a 1-0 non-conference victory over Georgia College at the Smith Road Complex.
A season after not registering a shot against the Bobcats (6-6-1), the Wolves (8-4) scored on the second shot of the match. A fifth minute shot by Ashley Veilleux of Georgia College opened the offensive action, before a long run down the flank with the ball by junior Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) led to the first offensive chance for Newberry.
Miller tore down the field before cutting into the 18-yard box and sending a low hard cross toward the goal mouth. Miller's ball drew Georgia College keeper Jessica Catapano out of position allowing Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) an open opportunity to tap-in her fourth goal of the season.
Brodie's goal wound up being all the Wolves needed offensively, but Newberry was required to put in a strong defensive performance to combat the offensive minded Bobcats. The Kiwi's goal was soon followed by a pair of shots by Georgia College that missed the frame.
After battling through a Georgia College attack the Wolves earned a corner kick in the 15th minute. Freshman Lindsay Huber (Selden, N.Y.) sent a ball toward the back post to junior Amber Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) who saw her header careen off the woodwork.
Sanchez's header off the crossbar was the best scoring chance Newberry had in the final half hour of the opening half.
The second period saw multiple opportunities for Newberry, including a headed shot by junior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.), which was turned away by Catapano in the 56th minute. One of Newberry's best chances in the second period came in the 73rd minute when Brodie sent a ball toward the top of the penalty area. Brodie's pass was run onto by sophomore Brittany Singleton (Canton, N.C.) who saw her look at goal stopped by Catapano.
The Wolves survived a pair of late chances by Georgia College and saw time expire on a 1-0 home victory.
Newberry's win was its fourth in-a-row, marking the longest winning streak of the season for the Wolves.
Huber led the Wolves with three shots and two on goal, while Brodie tallied her 19th career goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) recorded two saves in her seventh clean sheet of the season. Darley now ranks No. 2 in the Newberry record books for shutouts in a season, and is third all-time at Newberry with nine career shutouts.
The Wolves return to the Smith Road Complex on Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference meeting with the Wingate Bulldogs.
