NEWBERRY - The No. 4 Newberry Wolves claimed bonus points in seven bouts on the way to a dominant 47-4 win over No. 9 West Liberty in the fifth session of the 2013 Super Region I Duals presented by Sonic Drive-In of Newberry in Eleazer Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Newberry moves to 13-2 on the season entering the final match of the day against Ohio Valley.
The first three bouts never left the first period as No. 4 125-pounder Jeff Vesta (Manhattan, Kan.) pinned Joe Wagstaff at the 1:10 mark, 133-pounder Nick Lankford (Braselton, Ga.) pinned Cole Nace at the 2:45 mark and No. 5 141-pounder B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) won by forfeit.
No. 8 149-pounder Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) had his way with Dan Carpenter, easing his way to a 25-9 technical fall. The first regular decision of the match came at 157 lbs. when Seiji Borja (North Charleston, S.C.) won over Art Hobley 8-1 to give the Wolves a 26-0 advantage.
At 165 lbs., Davis Bagwell (Birmingham, Ala.) pinned Dave Schlieper at the 2:56 mark and 174-pounder Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) won by forfeit to move the lead to 38-0.
Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.), a mid-year transfer from Nebraska, made his varsity debut in a Newberry singlet at 184 lbs. and pinned Scott Kaiser at the 2:15 mark and 197-pounder Braden Carter (Christiansburg, Va.) defeated Danny Doyle by decision, 8-1. Newberry's only loss of the dual came at heavyweight, where Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) was on the wrong end of a major decision to Mike Carpenter, 13-4.
