JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The first long road trip of the season turned sour quickly as the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles soared to a 57-39 victory over the Newberry women's basketball team Saturday inside of the Holt Fieldhouse.

Newberry (10-4-,2-2- SAC) played from behind early as Carson-Newman (8-3, 2-2 SAC) took advantage of 15 first half turnovers by the Wolves to jump out to an early 11-0 lead. It wasn't until the 12:31 mark in the opening half that the Wolves found themselves in the scoring column as junior Tasia Holdorf (Anchorage, Alaska) hit from the free throw line.

From the field it was senior Kendra Brown (Swansea, S.C.) who struck first for the Wolves on a jumper with 11:42 remaining in the opening period. Newberry began to figure out the Lady Eagles' defensive pressure as the first half went on, as a 47-percent performance from the field by Newberry pulled the Wolves back into the game.

Newberry cut the Carson-Newman lead to 11-6 with less than ten minutes remaining in the first half. Carson-Newman again took a small run extending its lead to eight points, before junior Ellie Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) gathered a long pass from Brown and finished with an easy layup for her first points of the afternoon.

Newberry continued to claw back into the game holding the Lady Eagles scoreless for the final four minutes of the first half. Despite trailing 23-16 before the defense shutdown Carson-Newman, the Wolves climbed back into the game to head to halftime down by only three points at 23-20.

Sophomore Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) led the Wolves with seven points and three rebounds in the opening half.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first as the Lady Eagles jumped out to a quick 31-20 lead. Junior Devanee Taylor (Chester, Va.) tallied for the Wolves at the 17 minute mark to open the Wolves second half account.

Carson-Newman continued its strong performance on the offensive and defensive end pushing its lead in the second half to 44-30 with then minutes remaining in the game. The 14-point lead for the Lady Eagles soon became an 18-point lead as the game reached the under eight minute media timeout with Carson-Newman on top 48-30.

The Wolves were unable to recover in the second half as the Lady Eagles wrapped up a 57-39 victory.

Lepaio led the Wolves with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Gleeson's one assist puts her at No. 10 all-time for career assists at Newberry with 175. Lepaio's eight rebounds give the sophomore 403 in her career.

Newberry returns home on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. showdown against the Wingate Bulldogs.
