Kufuor strikes again as Wolves fall 3-1 to Lakers

MORROW, Ga. - Newberry senior Kofi Kufuor scored for the second straight match, but it his second half strike was not enough as the Wolves fell 3-1 at Clayton State.

The Wolves (2-2) fell behind early when the Lakers struck in the 13th minute of the match. Despite falling behind early, the Wolves held off the Clayton State attack for the remainder of the opening period.

Clayton State placed five shots on frame in the first half, seeing four turned away by Newberry junior Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.).

The second half was largely controlled by the Lakers as well, as Clayton State outshot the Wolves 9-2. Clayton State capitalized on opportunities when the Lakers scored in the 51st minute and again in the 63rd minute.

Newberry avoided being shutout in the 77th minute, when Kufuor (Accra, Ghana) scored off a pass from sophomore Nick Rembowski (Mooresville, N.C.).

Sweatt finished the evening with six saves. Kufuor was one of three Wolves to place shots on frame, joined by juniors Joseph Santos (Charleston, S.C.) and Stephen Harvey (Kingston, Jamaica).

Newberry returns home on Saturday to open the South Atlantic Conference schedule by playing host to Carson Newman at 4:30 p.m.
