Phillips records six hits on day as Wolves split with Trojans

ANDERSON, S.C. - A pair of three-hit performances by Newberry junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) highlighted the Wolves' South Atlantic Conference doubleheader split at Anderson in which the Wolves topped the Trojans 9-7 in game two after falling 9-4 in the opener.

The Wolves earned their second victory of conference play and saw their record improve to 18-23 overall and 2-14 in conference action.

Game One: Anderson 9, Newberry 4
Phillips tallied three hits, while sophomore Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) recorded two RBI as the Wolves fell 9-4 in game one at Anderson.

Anderson struck first plating two runs in the bottom of the first, while the Wolves countered with four runs in the top of the second.

Sophomore Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) opened the second inning with a double to left center before advancing to third on a one out sacrifice bunt by sophomore Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.). With two outs and Stevens on third, a walk to sophomore Lindsey Workman (Aiken, S.C.) placed runners on the corners. Junior Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) singled to right scoring the Wolves' first run of the afternoon.

Phillips followed Diaz with a single to second before an error allowed Workman to score, also allowing Diaz and Phillips on third and second, respectively. The Wolves final two runs were plated a batter later when Yancey doubled to right center.

The Trojans scored a pair of runs in the fourth before plating a run each in the fifth and sixth innings.

Game Two: Newberry 9, Anderson 7
Phillips recorded three hits and three RBI, while junior Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) tallied two RBI and also earned a victory in the circle as the Wolves topped the Trojans 9-7 at Smethers Field.

It wasn't until the third inning that the Wolves opened the scoring as Brugh doubled to left center to lead off the inning. A passed ball allowed Brugh to safely reach third, before scoring on a single through the left side by Phillips.

Anderson tied the game with a run in the third, before the Wolves offense broke out for seven runs in the top of the fourth.

Freshman Summer Bartek (Jefferson, Ga.) recorded a one out infield single, which was followed by a single to left center by Brugh. After Workman drew a walk, Diaz delivered a bases loaded double to right center that scored Brugh and Bartek. Workman scored a batter later as on a Phillips single to left.

With Diaz at third and second base open, Phillips successfully stole second before Yancey singled up the middle scoring Diaz. Yancey stole second setting up a second and third situation for the Wolves, which resulted in a RBI single by sophomore Shelby Holland (Charlotte, N.C.). After Holland stole second, the Wolves plated a pair of runs when Camacho singled to left center.

Following a two-run fourth for Anderson, the Wolves added a final insurance run in the fifth when Bartek reached on an error, which saw the Wolves' right fielder reach second. A ground out by Brugh allowed Bartek to reach third before she scored on a double to right center by Phillips.

Anderson threatened a comeback scoring four runs in the sixth, before the Wolves escaped with a victory.

In the circle Camacho tallied six strikeouts as she picked up her fifth victory of the season.
