Phillips records four hits as Tornados sweep Wolves

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry softball team dropped a pair of games to the visiting Brevard Tornados at the Newberry Softball Field, falling 3-1 in game one and 6-1 in game two.

Newberry drops to 14-19 on the season and 0-10 in South Atlantic Conference action. The Wolves return to the Newberry Softball Field on Saturday when they host Carson-Newman in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Game One: Brevard 3, Newberry 1
Freshman Summer Bartek (Jefferson, Ga.) led the Wolves in game one with two hits, while junior Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) drove in a run as the Wolves fell in the opener to Brevard.

Neither team was able to push a run across until Brevard struck for one in the top of the fourth inning. After a two run top of the sixth by the Tornados, Newberry answered in the bottom of the frame.

With one out junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) singled to left center, before she scored from first on a double to left center by Diaz.

The Wolves looked to score more in the bottom of the seventh as Bartek led off the inning with a single to right. After Bartek was replaced by pinch runner Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.), pinch hitter Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) singled to center putting runners on first and second. After Phillips was hit by a pitch to load the bases, the Wolves ran out of outs as Brevard secured the victory.

Game Two: Brevard 6, Newberry 1
Phillips tallied three hits and a RBI in game two as the Wolves fell to the Tornado.

Brevard opened the scoring in game two with four runs in the third inning, before adding a pair in the fourth.

Newberry struck in the sixth when sophomore Shelby Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) doubled to left to lead off the inning. A Bartek single put runners on the corners, before Holland was swapped for pinch runner Casey Nakawatase (Lincolnwood, Ill.). With two outs a Phillips single plated Nakawatase for the Wolves' lone run of the second game.
