Box Score REIDVILLE, S.C. - Sophomore Lindsey Workman collected a pair of hits, including a RBI triple to the wall, as the Wolves took advantage of Erskine mistakes and topped the Flying Fleet 6-0 in the Wolves' opening game of the Fourth Annual Mid-South Classic being held at Tyger River Park.
Neither team was able to do much in the opening two innings, before the Wolves opened the scoring in the top of the third.
It was Workman (Aiken, S.C.) who started the inning off and worked the count to her advantage before drawing a full count walk. After advancing to second on an error, which also allowed for junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) to reach first safely, Workman scored on an infield single by sophomore Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.).
With runners once again on first and second, a passed ball and delayed reaction by the Flying Fleet allowed Phillips to score from second and Stevens to move to third base. An infield single by junior Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) pushed Stevens across the plate before Erskine recorded the final out of the inning.
Newberry added a fourth run in the top of the fourth as junior Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) drove a double to left center, before a single by Workman put runners on the corners. With two outs and runners now on second and third, another infield single for the Wolves would plate Camacho.
Neither offense proved much of a threat the next couple of innings, before Camacho singled up the middle with one out in the sixth. Camcho did not remain on first long before Workman drove an 0-1 pitch to the wall in right centerfield to plate Camacho. A groundout by sophomore Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) pushed the game's final run across the plate, as Workman became the sixth run in the ballgame.
Workman and Camacho each finished 2-3 from the plate, while Newberry junior Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) was able to keep the Flying Fleet grounded scattering only three hits and striking out nine.
Newberry continues the Mid-South Classic tomorrow at noon against Glenville State.
