Wolves swept in pair of games by Tornado

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Newberry softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at King College as the Tornado topped the Wolves 9-2 in game one and 4-0 in game two at the KC Softball Complex.

The Wolves drop to 13-12 on the season with the losses at King. Newberry returns to the Newberry College Softball Field on Wednesday at 2 p.m. when the Wolves host Pikeville.

Game One: King 9, Newberry 2
Newberry freshman Jada Crocker (Gaffney, S.C.) led the Wolves in game one with two hits, and along with junior Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) tallied a RBI as the Wolves fell to the Tornado.

After King plated six runs in the first four innings, Newberry countered in the sixth with a pair of runs. Despite threatening in the fifth, the Wolves were unable to break through until the sixth when junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) singled through the right side with one out, and advanced to second on a fielder's choice that also saw sophomore Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) reach first safely.

With a pair of runners on base and one out, Phillips would steal third before senior Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.) would walk to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Crawford would ground out to short allowing Phillips to score the Wolves first run of the day. As the bases remained loaded, a two out single to left by Crocker would plate Stevens for the Wolves final run of the ball game.
