HICKORY, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves fell twice on the softball diamond as the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears topped the Wolves 3-1 in the opening game of the doubleheader and 5-2 in the second game.

Newberry drops to 13-10 on the season and 0-6 in South Atlantic Conference action. The Wolves return to action on Monday when Newberry travels to Bristol, Tennessee for a doubleheader against King.

Game One: Lenoir-Rhyne 3, Newberry 1
Six Wolves tallied hits as the Bears scored three runs after the Wolves opened the game with a first inning run.

Newberry starting pitcher Caitlyn Smith (Palm Harbor, Fla.) struck out two as she fell to 4-4 on the season.

Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) opened the day with a single to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error, before heading to third on a Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) groundout. One batter later, Phillips would score the Wolves' only run of the ballgame on a single to left center by Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.).

Newberry threatened in the top of the fifth when down 3-1, Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.) singled to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt attempt by Lindsey Workman (Aiken, S.C.) ended in a double play. With no runners on Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) singled to left before Phillips popped out to short.

Game Two: Lenoir-Rhyne 5, Newberry 2
Buccellato recorded a pair of hits and an RBI in a game two loss for the Wolves at Bears Field.

As they did in the first game the Wolves scored in the opening frame as Diaz reached safely on a fielding error. After a pair of outs moved Diaz to second, a wild pitch saw the Wolves' outfielder reach third safely. Following a Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) walk, Buccellato singled to left allowing Diaz to score the games first run.

Following back-to-back innings in which the Bears scored two runs, Newberry scored a second run in the top of the third when Diaz singled to lead off the inning. A fielder's choice and throwing error placed Phillips on second with one out. After Yancey grounded out pushing Phillips to third, Stevens singled in the Wolves' final run of the day.
