Four Wolves homer in pair of losses at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry softball team hit four home runs on the day, but fell in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader to the Mars Hill Lions by margins of 4-0 and 6-5 at Ponder Park.

Newberry falls to 13-8 on the season and 0-4 in SAC play entering a Saturday double dip at No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne.

Game One: Mars Hill 4, Newberry 0
Newberry junior Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) recorded the Wolves lone hit and struck out four in the circle as the Wolves fell in the opening game.

Camacho surrendered a pair of runs in the first inning on a Mars Hill two-run homer, before allowing a second two-run bomb in the bottom of the fifth. The Wolves only saw two runners reach base in the Lions game one victory.

Game Two: Mars Hill 6, Newberry 5
Camacho led the Wolves at the plate with three hits in the second game, while four Wolves hit home runs as the Lions edged Newberry by a run.

The Wolves scored their first run of the afternoon as junior Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) homered to left center in the top of the second inning. Two batters later junior Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) ripped a solo homer of her own giving Newberry an early two run lead.

The bottom of the third was unkind to the Wolves as the Lions hung a six-run inning on the scoreboard. Newberry answered in the top of the fourth with a pair of solo home runs coming off the bats of sophomore Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.) and junior Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.).

Newberry plated their final run of the day in the top of the fifth when junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an error. Another Lions error allowed Phillips to score with two outs for the final run of the day.
