Newberry drops pair of games to Tusculum

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday to South Atlantic Conference opponent Tusculum, falling 3-0 in game one, and 3-2 in a 10-inning game two.

The Wolves fall to 11-6 overall and drop to 0-2 in the SAC. Newberry takes a quick break from SAC action on Tuesday as the West Liberty Hilltoppers head to the Newberry College Softball Field for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Game One: Tusculum 3, Newberry 0
Newberry starting pitcher Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) recorded six strikeouts in a tough 3-0 loss the Pioneers that saw the two teams combine for only seven hits.

Tusculum opened the scoring in the first with a solo homer to center by Kaytlin Stroinski in the first inning. In the third Tusculum added a second run as Katy Stuckwish walked to lead off the frame, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on a single by Savannah Ewing.

The final run of the game came in the sixth when with two outs Katie Brennan doubled to left and scored on a throwing error for the Pioneers third and final run.

Game Two: Tusculum 3, Newberry 2 (10 innings)
Newberry junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) led the Wolves with three hits, while sophomore Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.) ripped a home run as Newberry fell in extra innings to the Pioneers.

Brugh's solo homer opened the second inning before senior Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.) reached on an error with one out in the frame. A single up the middle by junior Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) pushed Buccellato to second, while sophomore catcher Lindsey Workman reached on an error to load the bases for Newberry. A grounder by sophomore Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) saw Buccellato called out at the plate, but with the bases still loaded Crawford was plated on a single to left by Phillips.

Newberry carried a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh, where with one out Tusculum's Ashley Bagley singled with one out, setting off back-to-back singles for the Pioneers. With runners on first and second with two outs in the inning, Ewing singled home the Pioneers first run of the game. Stuckwish was driven home one batter later as Stroinski singled to left to tie the game.

Despite putting runners on second and third, Newberry was unable to push a run across in the bottom of the seventh inning. After two scoreless frames in extra innings, Tusculum was able to score the games final run in the top of the 10th.
