NEWBERRY, S.C. - It wasn't until bats took to the Newberry skies that the Wolves were able to wrap up a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Pfeiffer Lady Falcons beginning with an 8-7 extra innings walk-off victory in game one and 6-5 win in game two.
Junior Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) provided plenty of fireworks for the Wolves offense delivering a three-run walk-off bomb in the bottom of the eighth inning of game one and scored the winning run in the second game of the day.
Roof and the Wolves improve to 7-3 on the season entering Saturday's doubleheader scheduled with Lander. The Wolves play host to the Bearcats at 1 p.m.
Game One: Newberry 8, Pfeiffer 7 (Eight Innings)
Newberry took advantage of a trio of homers to down the Lady Falcons in the opening game of the afternoon.
After two and a half scoreless innings, the Wolves opened the scoring when sophomore Hailey Harris (Rougemont, N.C.) hammered the first pitch she saw in the third inning over the centerfield wall to put the Wolves up 1-0.
Pfeiffer countered with two runs in the fourth, before Newberry put three runs on the board in the bottom of the frame. The Wolves half of the fourth opened with a Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) walk. Stevens moved to second when fellow sophomore Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.) was hit by a pitch.
A sacrifice bunt by Roof moved the runners to second and third before a wild pitch pushed Stevens across the plate and Brugh to second. With Brugh on third and two outs, sophomore Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) hammered a 1-1 pitch to left center putting Newberry in front 4-2.
After Pfeiffer answered with a homer in the fifth, neither team was able to push another run across until the top of the seventh.
It appeared that junior Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) was in line for a save as she struck out the first hitter she saw in the first inning, before a dropped third strike allowed Andrea Wagner to reach base safely. A throwing error by the Wolves put Wagner on third and Melanie Conklin on first. After Conklin advanced to second, Wagner was plated on ground out by Hannah Jackson.
The Wolves were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh and the two teams headed to extra innings tied 4-4. With a runner starting the inning at second base, Pfeiffer scored a run quickly as a sacrifice bunt moved runner Kirsten Patterson to third where she would score on a single to left by Lindsey Russell.
After two more runs crossed the plate for Pfeiffer, Newberry scored on the first at-bat of the inning as junior Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) tripled in junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.). After Stevens was hit by a pitch, and Brugh flew out to shallow center, Roof took the first pitch she saw and sent it over the centerfield fence giving the Wolves an 8-7 victory.

Game Two: Newberry 6, Pfeiffer 5
Pfeiffer opened game two with early runs in the first and third innings. Newberry battled back in the fourth inning as Stevens led off with a double to center. A single by Brugh was followed by a Roof single to left scored Stevens putting the Wolves behind by a run.
After junior Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) walked to load the bases, Yancey singled in Brugh. With the bases still loaded, sophomore Lindsey Workman (Aiken, S.C.) walked plating the Wolves third and final run of the inning.
The Lady Falcons scored three in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead, which Pfeiffer carried into the bottom of the seventh.
As the sunlight disappeared and bats began to circle the Newberry Softball Field, Phillips reached first on an error and stole second base. Phillips scored on a single to right field by Stevens, who would advance to second on the throw.
After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Stevens was replaced by pinch runner Casey Nakawatase (Lincolnwood, Ill.). With a runner on third and two outs, Roof reached base on a fielding error as Nakawatase tied the game by crossing the plate. On the error, Roof reached second base, where she would steal third and score the game's winning run as the throw to third was too tough to handle by the Lady Falcons third baseman allowing Roof to scamper home on the error.
