Phillips drives in two as Wolves drop pair to King

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Junior Brittany Phillips recorded a pair of RBI as the Wolves fell twice to the visiting King Lady Tornado, dropping the first game 3-2 and the second 5-1.

The two losses by Newberry give the Wolves a 5-3 record entering a doubleheader against Pfeiffer scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Newberry College Softball Field. The Wolves homestand will come to an end on Saturday as the Wolves play host to Lander for a twinbill scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Game One: King 3, Newberry 2

Newberry starting pitcher Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) struck out five in the Wolves 3-2 loss to the Lady Tornado.

The Wolves opened the scoring against King in the second inning when sophomore catcher Lindsey Workman (Aiken, S.C.) singled down the right field line before advancing to second on a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, it was Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) who drove in the game's first run as she singled up the middle allowing Workman to score from second.

King answered the Wolves run by putting three runs on the board in the top of the third inning on a string of singles.

The final run of the game came in the bottom of the frame when sophomore Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) doubled to right. After freshman Casey Nakwatase (Lincolnwood, Ill.) replaced Stevens on the base paths the Wolves surrendered a pair of outs. With two down Nakawatase advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a single by senior Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.).

Game Two: King 5, Newberry 1

A pair of homers by the Lady Tornado sunk the Wolves in game two as five Newberry hits were unable to put more than a run across the plate.

King touched up Newberry junior Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) in the third inning as Stephanie Rodriguez singled up the middle and was driven home on a two-run homer by Kendall Brabson.

Newberry countered in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore Hailey Harris (Rougemont, N.C.) singled to start off the frame. After Camacho replaced Harris on the bases, a sacrifice bunt put the Wolves runner on second base. A wild pitch moved Camacho to third before Phillips singled to left scoring the Wolves only run of the game.

King added a third run in the fourth inning, before putting two runs on the board on a two-run line drive homer to center by Cassie Ringstaff.
