NEWBERRY, S.C. - An impressive six-run sixth inning pushed the Newberry softball team to a 9-7 game two win over Coker as the Wolves rebounded from a 15-7 game one loss to the Cobras at the Newberry College Softball Field.
Newberry's split with Coker moves the Wolves to 5-1 on the season with the next batch of doubleheader action taking place on Sunday, February 19, as Newberry hosts Young Harris at 1 p.m. The Wolves' five straight home doubleheaders will continue on Tuesday, February 21, as King heads to Newberry.
Game One: Coker 15, Newberry 7
Junior Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) and senior Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.) both hit two-run homeruns as the Wolves battled the Cobras in the first game of the afternoon doubleheader.
Both the Cobras and Wolves jumped onto the scoreboard early as Coker plated a pair of runs in the first inning before Newberry opened the bottom of the first with a runner as junior Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) was hit by the second pitch she saw from Coker's Jordan Atkinson. After Diaz advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, sophomore Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) hit a line drive off the left leg of Atkinson scoring Diaz.
With a pair of outs and Stevens on first, Roof ripped her second homer of the young season giving the Wolves a 3-2 first inning lead. The Cobras tallied five runs over the next two innings to take control of the game with a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Newberry added a pair of runs in the fourth as Buccellato homered to center scoring sophomore Paige Brugh and herself. Back-to-back four-run innings did Newberry in as Coker walked away with a 15-7 six-inning victory in game one.

Game Two: Newberry 9, Coker 7
The Cobras looked to carry momentum from the first game into game two as Coker put three runs on the scoreboard in the opening frame, but Stevens did damage to the Cobras in both the circle and batter box on the way to her first victory of the season.
After surrendering three runs in the first inning, Newberry placed runners on the corners before Roof tripled to right field scoring both Diaz and Stevens pulling the Wolves within a run early. Newberry knotted the game up in the third inning when Stevens doubled with two outs before scoring on a double to right center by Roof.
A Coker run in the fourth was followed by a solo homer in the fifth inning by Gina Easler giving the Cobras a 5-3 fifth inning lead. After a scoreless bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, Newberry strung together a six-run sixth to take control of the second game of the afternoon twin bill.
Freshman Jada Crocker (Gaffney, S.C.) led off the bottom of the sixth with a single down the leftfield line. After sophomore Lindsey Workman (Aiken, S.C.) checked in as a pinch runner, junior Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) looked to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Camacho's bunt down the third baseline was booted by Easler allowing Workman to advance to second and Camacho to reach first safely. A wild pitch moved both runners before sophomore Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) singled to center scoring Workman. Junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) loaded the bases with a single of her own, which was followed by a RBI single to left-center by Diaz.
Newberry continued the scoring spree as Stevens drove in a pair of runs on an infield single and scored herself as Buccellato doubled in another two runs for the Wolves. In the top of the seventh, Stevens worked herself out of trouble escaping with only two runs crossing the plate before she struck Clarissa Suttle out and found Logan Cox watching a third strike go by clinching a 9-7 Wolves victory.
