Wolves open duals slate with wins over UIndy, Lindsey Wilson

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The fourth-ranked Newberry Wolves opened their duals schedule for the 2012-13 season with wins over the University of Indianapolis and Lindsey Wilson College at LWC's Biggers Sports Center on Wednesday evening.

With the wins, Newberry is 2-0 on the season entering the Sixth Annual Newberry Duals in Eleazer Arena on Saturday, December 8, with duals against Cumberland (Tenn.), Findlay (Ohio), Darton (Ga.) and Lake Erie (Ohio).

"I don't think we wrestled as well as we should have tonight and it seemed like we were sleep-walking through these duals," head coach Jason Valek said. "We have to get our weights under control and get stronger mentally in order to perform at a higher level. That's our fault as coaches to not have our kids prepared and we will do a better job across the board and make the necessary changes.

"Seiji Borja and Travis Sheehy were bright spots in our lineup tonight and wrestled their tails off. While we're not pleased with what we saw tonight, we are excited that all of the issues we saw were fixable and we are ready to go back to work to have a great showing at home next weekend," Valek added.

The Greyhounds closed to within 12-6 when Cameryn Brady upset Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) 11-5 at 149 lbs. before Newberry won four straight bouts.

In a rarity, no bonus points were recorded in the Wolves' second dual of the day against the hosting Blue Raiders, who entered the match ranked 10th in the NAIA.

The match was the second in Newberry history with no bonus point wins, and the only match in the eight years of the program with no bonus points and no overtime victories. There were two overtime decisions in Newberry's 24-6 win over King in the 2012 National Duals quarterfinals.

Vesta opened the dual with a 7-4 decision over Kary Goff at 125 lbs. before LWC tied the dual at 3-all with Jake McCombs' 9-7 decision over Partridge at 133 lbs. At 141 lbs., Young shut out Wismit Moinius 6-0 for the first of five straight Newberry victories to give the Wolves a stranglehold on the match. Deral Brown at 149 lbs. earned a 13-6 decision over Josh Johnson, Borja at 157 lbs. claimed a 6-2 decision over Scott Flesher, Knapp at 165 lbs. had an 8-1 decision over Cadyn McKeeth and Sheehy at 174 lbs. had a 10-3 decision over James Haywood to put the team score at 18-3 in Newberry's favor.

The winning streak was snapped at 184 lbs. when Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) was edged by Jameel Bryant, 6-5, to close the team score gap to 18-6.

Grisko sealed Newberry's victory with a 3-1 decision over Aaron Edington and Folk-Freund was on the wrong end of an 8-1 decision to Teddy Furnish to close out the dual.
