Box Score NEWBERRY - A two-goal afternoon from senior Kofi Kufuor was not enough for the Newberry men's soccer team as the Wolves fell 4-2 to the visiting St. Andrews Knights on Wednesday.
Kufuor (Accra, Ghana) opened the scoring 45 seconds into the match for the Wolves (3-9-1) when a throw-in from junior Michael Newhall (Springfield, Va.) was redirected by freshman Anthony Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) and tapped in by Kufuor.
Less than 30 seconds later Caio Liberatti answered for St. Andrews (6-7) from about 20 yards out.
St. Andrews controlled the possession for much of the first half, leading to a second goal from Liberatti in the 24th minute and a 44th minute tally from Brandon Standridge.
The Knights seemed to control the momentum in the early part of the second half before junior Jay Barajas (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman Mario Stojkoski (Skopje, Macedonia) combined to assist Kufuor on his second goal of the afternoon and sixth of the season.
Kufuor's second goal was not enough as the Knights put the match out of reach with a header goal in the 81st minute.
The two-goal outing by Kufuor was the Ghanaian's second brace of the season, having completed the task in a 2-0 win against Belmont Abbey in the third match of the season. Lucido's assist was his sixth of the season, putting the freshman at No. 10 all-time in individual season assists along with former Newberry soccer player Debola Ogunseye.
Newberry will hit the home pitch once again on Saturday when the Wolves host Erskine at 2 p.m.
