HARROGATE, Tenn. - A career high 24-points off the bench for junior guard Kendra Brown was not enough for the Wolves as the Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters handed Newberry a 79-63 loss, the first of the conference schedule for the Wolves.
Newberry (8-4, 3-1 South Atlantic Conference) fell behind early as the Lady Railsplitters (8-4, 3-1 SAC) opened the evening on a 13-4 run which was cut into as Brown (Swansea, S.C.) scored on a fast break layup with 13:32 remaining. The Wolves continued to cut into the Lincoln Memorial at the 5:41 mark when a jumper by senior Brittany Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) put the LMU lead at only four points.
After giving up a pair of free throws, Newberry scored four straight before a media timeout with 3:57 left in the half. The Wolves carried momentum out of the timeout and took their first lead of the evening at 3:28 on a fast break layup by junior Neicey Lewis (Riverdale, Ga.). The Wolves lead was short lived as the Lady Railsplitters tied the game at 26-26, before the Wolves again took the lead.
Newberry extended its lead to as many as three points before a last second layup by Dayshalee Salaman tied the game at 32-32 as the two teams headed to the locker room for halftime.
Lewis led the Wolves at halftime with nine points and two steals, while Kendra Brown had eight points and three rebounds off the bench.
Just as they did at the start of the game the Lady Railsplitters opened the second half with the hot hand and not only regained the lead, but extended the lead to seven points five minutes into the half. The Wolves battled back into the game and regained a lead at 10:33 on a made free throw by Lewis. Newberry's lead extended to five points, before the Wolves relinquished their last lead of the game.
Lincoln Memorial took control of the game after regaining the lead at 7:14 on a jumper by Lauren Cochran. The Lady Railsplitters led by as many as 18 points before leaving Tex Turner Arena with a 16-point victory.
Newberry was led offensively by Kendra Brown's 24 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Ellie Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) recorded eight rebounds of her own. Lewis finished with 10 points and three assists for Newberry.
The Wolves return home on Wednesday January 11, when they play host to the visiting Anderson Trojans at 6 p.m.
