Lepaio tallies 10th double-double in Wolves' 58-45 win

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Haylee Lepaio's 10th double-double of the season paced the Wolves in a 58-45 victory over Tusculum, giving Newberry back-to-back wins over Tusculum for the first time in a season since 2005.

Newberry (12-6, 7-3 South Atlantic Conference) led for most of the game, falling behind the Pioneers (13-5, 7-3 SAC) only once in the first half after Tusculum scored on its opening possession. After a Jama Hammontree jumper, Newberry rattled off eight-straight points to take an 8-2 lead five minutes into the game.

Tusculum struggled from the field in the first half, shooting only 17.6-percent. Newberry took advantage of the cold shooting Pioneers as a layup with 9:21 remaining in the first half by sophomore Devanee Taylor (Chester, Va.) put Newberry up by eight points, its largest lead of the half.

The Pioneers battled back from the Wolves eight-point lead as Linda Aughburns began the Tusculum rally with a little under nine minutes remaining. It was a 3-pointer by Hammontree that cut the Wolves lead to two, but senior Brittany Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) connected on a layup to put the Wolves ahead by four.

Newberry jumped out to a second eight-point lead with a little over two minutes left in the half as junior Neicey Lewis (Riverdale, Ga.) scored on a layup. The Wolves lead lessened before a jumper by sophomore Ellie Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) gave the Wolves a six-point lead entering the half.

Gleeson and Brown led Newberry at halftime with six points each, while Hammontree led all scorers with seven.

Tusculum opened the second half with seven straight points to gain a lead for the second time in the game. The one-point lead, which came on a Staci Hicks layup, was short lived as Taylor scored on the other end of the court to put Newberry ahead once again.

Lepaio opened her second half scoring almost five minutes into the second half with a layup to give Newberry a three-point lead. A few minutes later, Lepaio's first 3-point make of her career put the Wolves up by six.

Again the Pioneers cut down the Wolves lead with a layup from Blakeley Burleson and back-to-back baskets from Hicks. Newberry again countered Tusculum's comeback attempt by scoring seven straight points to put Newberry ahead by nine with 6:09 on the clock.

It wasn't until 1:10 remaining that Newberry picked up a double-digit lead when Gleeson hit a pair of free throws. Gleeson's pair of free throws was the first of 10 straight makes from the line by Newberry before time expired.

Lepaio led the Wolves with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Gleeson scored a career high 10 points. Lewis just missed a double-double as she scored nine points and recorded eight rebounds. Hicks led all scorers with 12 points.

Newberry plays the final of three-straight home games on Wednesday, February 1 when it hosts Mars Hill at 6 p.m.
